Common Drugs Tied to Increased Risk of Cognitive Decline

Anticholinergic medications, commonly used for conditions including allergies, high blood pressure, Parkinson's disease, and motion sickness, have been linked to an increased risk of cognitive decline and memory problems, especially in those with genetic risk factors for Alzheimer's disease.

Unique Protein Structures Could Hold the Key to Parkinson’s Disease

Researchers have discovered a series of misfolded alpha-synuclein protein structures never previously observed. The alpha-synuclein fibers were larger than previously reported and adopted a striking variety of shapes. The work lays the foundation for a detailed analysis of misfolded alpha-synuclein structures and could provide a better understanding of the neurobiology of Parkinson's disease.

One-time treatment generates new neurons and eliminates Parkinson’s disease

Researchers administered PTB antisense oligonucleotide treatment directly to the midbrain of mice. In the mouse models exposed to the treatment, a small subset of astrocytes converted to neurons, increasing the number of neurons by 30%. Three months after treatment, mice were completely free of Parkinson's disease symptoms and remained in remission for the rest of their lives.

Disrupted circadian rhythms linked to later Parkinson’s diagnoses

Circadian rhythm disruptions in older men have been linked to an increased risk of developing Parkinson's disease. The findings suggest circadian disruptions may reflect the neurodegenerative processes already affecting the brain's internal clock prior to the diagnosis of Parkinson's. Circadian disruptions, researchers say, could be considered an early warning sign of Parkinson's.

Link between diesel exhaust and risk of Parkinson’s discovered

Researchers have uncovered the process by which air pollution can damage brain cells, leading to an increased risk of Parkinson's disease. Chemicals found in diesel fuel reduced autophagic flux, which is a major pathway implicated in neurodegeneration.

Researchers unravel protein mystery of three brain diseases

Researchers have identified two different shapes of alpha-synuclein associated with multiple systems atrophy (MSA) and Lewy body dementia. The structure of the protein is helical in MSA, causing the symptoms to occur more quickly and aggressively. In Lewy body dementia, the protein takes on a cylindrical form.

More evidence Parkinson’s disease may start in the gut

Enteric neurons appear to play a key role in the development of Parkinson's disease. The findings support the hypothesis and previous studies that the neurodegenerative disease may start in the gut before spreading to the brain. Researchers also found oligodendrocytes were affected during the early stages of Parkinson's, even before the loss of dopaminergic neurons.
