Ragweed compounds could protect nerve cells from Alzheimer’s

Compounds derived from common ragweed may help in the fight against Alzheimer's disease. Researchers report when two of the most active compounds were added to a sample of neurons producing amyloid beta, 20% more cells survived than without exposure.

New early detection blood test for Alzheimer’s

A new two-tier diagnostic blood test which evaluates both amyloid beta and tau, can help detect Alzheimer's disease in presymptomatic patients.

          Alzheimer’s disease is a ‘double-prion disorder’

Self-propagating amyloid and tau act as prions in the pathology of Alzheimer's disease. Higher levels of the prions in human brain samples were strongly correlated with early onset of Alzheimer's and death at a younger age.

Restoring brain function in mice with symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease

Senolytic drugs administered to mice reduced senescent cells around amyloid plaques by more than 90% and decreased neuroinflammation by 50%. Mice treated with the drug combination also showed improvements in spatial memory, compared to other Alzheimer's model mice who received no treatment. The findings could have positive implications for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease in people with the condition.

Do microglia hold the key to stop Alzheimer’s disease?

Mouse models and human brain tissue studies reveal microglia react to amyloid beta earlier in older females. Findings may provide avenues for the development of new drugs to help treat the neurodegenerative disease.

When is Alzheimer’s not Alzheimer’s? Researchers characterize a different form of dementia

LATE, a form of dementia that appears in the oldest-old is often mistaken for Alzheimer's disease, but the brain pathology is very different. The protein TDP-43 appears to play a significant role in the development of LATE. The neurodegenerative disease may progress more gradually than Alzheimer's, but when combined with Alzheimer's disease (a common combination), appears to cause a more rapid decline than either would alone.

More vitamin D may improve memory but too much may slow reaction time

Taking higher doses of vitamin D supplements can help improve memory and learning, but negatively impacts reaction time in postmenopausal women with a higher BMI. Researchers suggest the slowed reaction times may contribute to an increased risk of falls in older people.

Hip Fractures May Be An Early Sign of Alzheimer’s in Older People

Researchers report they have identified biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease in spinal fluid samples of a significant number of older patients hospitalized as a result of hip fractures. The study suggests neural alterations that lead to poor balance in older people may signify an increased risk of falls that result in hip fractures, and Alzheimer's disease. Researchers suggest the hip fracture, therefore, may serve as an early sign of Alzheimer's in older patients.
