Education and intelligence may protect cognition’ but don’t prevent Alzheimer’s disease

Intelligence, education and participating in cognitively challenging tasks may stave off the effects of dementia for longer, but can not protect against the inevitable Alzheimer's pathology in those at risk.

Memory Preserver: Researchers Develop Vaccine That Could Protect Against Alzheimer’s

Researchers have engineered a vaccine using virus-like particles that target Tau tangles in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease. Following the administration of the vaccine, the mice developed antibodies that cleared tau proteins, with the response lasting for a month. The mice also showed improvements in memory based tests and had less brain shrinkage than their peers who did not receive the vaccine. This suggests the vaccine prevented apoptosis. Researchers hope to move the vaccine to human clinical trials in the future.

Brush your teeth to postpone Alzheimer’s

Brushing your teeth may be a way to stave off the development of Alzheimer's disease. Study provides new evidence of how bacteria associated with gingivitis contributes to the development of the neurodegenerative disease.

As plaque deposits increase in the aging brain, money management falters

Older adults who experience problems completing simple financial tasks, such as calculating their change, may be at increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. Problems with financial management have often been associated with later stage dementia. A new study reveals this could be one of the earliest signs of dementia and may be correlated with a build-up of amyloid plaque deposits.

Coat of proteins makes viruses more infectious and links them to Alzheimer’s disease

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) interact with biological fluids, creating a coat of proteins around the viral surface. This results in the viruses becoming more infectious and can contribute to the formation of amyloid plaques. In animal models, researchers found these viruses can bind to amyloid proteins, which aggregate into plaques that contribute to Alzheimer's disease. HSV-1 is able to accelerate the transformation of soluble amyloid proteins into amyloid plaques.

Identifying the molecular structure of one of Alzheimer’s stickier culprits

Researchers map a toxic protein associated with Alzheimer's disease. The study reports that pS8-AB40 acts as the alpha structure in polymorphism and has higher levels of cellular toxicity compared to other fibrils.

Antibiotic treatment alleviates Alzheimer’s disease symptoms in male mice

Study reports specific gut bacteria can influence the development of Alzheimer's disease. In mouse models, long term antibiotic treatment reduced inflammation and the formation of amyloid plaques. However, the reduction was only seen in males. Additionally, the antibiotic treatment altered the activation of microglia in the male mouse models.

Self-propagating amyloid and tau act as prions in the pathology of Alzheimer's disease. Higher levels of the prions in human brain samples were strongly correlated with early onset of Alzheimer's and death at a younger age.

Restoring brain function in mice with symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease

Senolytic drugs administered to mice reduced senescent cells around amyloid plaques by more than 90% and decreased neuroinflammation by 50%. Mice treated with the drug combination also showed improvements in spatial memory, compared to other Alzheimer's model mice who received no treatment. The findings could have positive implications for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease in people with the condition.
