Blood Fat Links Found Between Heart Risk and Alzheimer’s

New research reveals complex relationships between blood lipid levels and the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia. While small dense LDL cholesterol—linked to heart disease—was associated with increased Alzheimer’s risk, other markers like ApoB48 were linked to reduced risk.

Fluctuating Cholesterol Linked to Higher Dementia Risk

Older adults with significant fluctuations in cholesterol levels are at increased risk for dementia and cognitive decline, even without medication changes. Researchers studied nearly 10,000 older adults, tracking their cholesterol levels and cognitive function over six years. High variability in total and LDL ("bad") cholesterol was associated with a 60% increase in dementia and 23% increase in cognitive decline.

HDL Cholesterol Quality, Not Quantity, Linked to Alzheimer’s Risk

Higher levels of HDL, the so-called "good cholesterol," may not protect against Alzheimer's in postmenopausal women, with the risk potentially tied to the quality, not quantity, of HDL particles. A new study shows that larger HDL particles, which increase during menopause, lose efficiency in supporting cognitive health.

High ‘Good Cholesterol’ Linked to Dementia Risk

A new study found that abnormally high levels of HDL-C (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol), often referred to as 'good cholesterol', may increase the risk of dementia in older adults. This large-scale study, part of the ASPREE project, observed over 18,668 participants, noting that those with very high HDL-C levels had a 27% higher risk of dementia.

Lipid and Glucose Levels at Age 35 Associated With Alzheimer’s Disease

Low HDL and high triglyceride levels in the blood at 35 were associated with an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease later in life. Additionally, higher glucose levels between 51 and 60 were linked to a higher risk of Alzheimer's.
