Immune System May Mount Attack in Parkinson’s

Researchers report T cells in Parkinson's disease patients respond to alpha synuclein to a greater degree than those without the disease. The Nature study reports four genetic variations are associated with T cell reactivity to alpha synuclein. More than 50% of Parkinson's patients carry at least one of the gene variants.

Drinking Coffee Could Lead to a Longer Life

Researchers report people who drink at least one cup of coffee a day are at a 12% reduced risk of dying from cancer, stroke and heart disease as those who did not partake in a daily cup of Joe. Lower mortality rates were present regardless of whether people drank fully caffeinated coffee or decaf, suggesting the association with longevity is not tied to caffeine.

Increased Risk For Melanoma in Parkinson’s Patients

A new study reveals people with Parkinson's disease face a higher risk of developing melanoma skin cancer, and vice versa, than those without the diseases. Parkinson's patients were 4 times more likely to develop skin cancer than those without the movement impairing disease. Additionally, people diagnosed with melanoma were at a fourfold risk of developing Parkinson's.

TBI Associated With Dementia in Working Aged Adults

A new study reports traumatic brain injury is associated with a higher risk of developing dementia in people of working age. However, the researchers found no association between TBI and other neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS or Parkinson's disease. Researchers hope their findings will improve rehabilitation treatments and long term monitoring of TBI patients.

Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Spurred By Same Enzyme

Researchers have implicated an enzyme that appears to make both Tau and alpha synculein more toxic in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Inhibiting this enzyme has already proved helpful in treating animal models of Alzheimer's disease. The researchers report they are moving on to testing drugs that inhibit AEP in animal models of Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson’s Associated Protein Linked to Human Upper GI Tract Infections

A new study reports chronic infections of the upper gastrointestinal tract could be linked to Parkinson's disease. Researchers say alpha synuclein, a Parkinson's linked protein, is released during upper GI infections, inducing an immune response. Findings suggest frequent chronic infections could overwhelm the body's ability to remove the protein, leading to the onset of Parkinson's.
