          How the Brain Senses Infection

A small group of neurons in the airway plays a key role in altering the brain of the presence of flu infection in the body, and a second pathway from the lungs to the brain becomes active later in infection. The findings also shed light on how NSAID anti-inflammatory medications alleviate flu symptoms.

Revolutionary Brain Tumor Breakthrough Unveils Promising New Drug Treatments

In recent research, scientists have discovered that blood vessels feeding high-grade glioma brain tumors have high levels of LDL receptors (LDLR) on them. The study found that using drug-containing nanoparticle-based therapies to target these receptors can be a new way of treating cancer. Gliomas are the most common primary brain tumors and, due to their highly aggressive nature, have a poor prognosis with an average survival of only 4.6 months without treatment and approximately 14 months with optimal multimodal treatments. This research could pave the way for treating glioma brain tumors with LDL receptor-targeted nanoparticle-based therapies, thereby cutting off the energy supply of cancer cells.

Identifying the Inflammatory Cells Behind Chemo Brain

Microglia appear to be associated with brain fog and memory problems that arise as a result of exposure to chemotherapy, researchers discovered. Deleting the immune cells from the microglia in mice who received the chemotherapy drug paclitaxel lowered inflammation and restored memory function.

Brain Circuit Involved in Fentanyl Abuse and Relapse Identified

Fentanyl enhances direct pathway medium spiny neurons activity in the striatum. During withdrawal from the opioid, inhibitory signals from direct pathway medium spiny neurons to dopaminergic neurons become enhanced. The enhanced suppression of dopaminergic neurons contributes to the negative emotions associated with fentanyl withdrawal. Inhibiting the direct pathway medium spiny neurons can reduce withdrawal symptoms and associated anxiety behaviors.

Receptor Location Matters for Psychedelic Drug Effects

Location bias may explain how psychedelic medications work. Researchers found that engaging serotonin 2A receptors inside neurons promotes the growth of new connections, but engaging the same receptor on the outside of a neuron does not. The findings may guide the development of new psychoplastogens to treat a range of disorders including depression and PTSD.
