Addicted to the Sun? Research Shows It’s in Your Genes

Identical twins were more likely to have similar sun-seeking behaviors than non-identical twins, suggesting genetics play a key role in sun-seeking behaviors. Researchers identified five genes associated with sun-seeking behavior, some of which have previously been associated with behavioral traits linked to risk-taking and addiction.

Genes Related to Inflammation and Stress May Help Tailor Treatments for Depression

Gene expression study reveals it is possible to distinguish between those with treatment-resistant depression and those with major depressive disorder who respond to antidepressants based on levels of inflammation and the presence of molecular mechanisms that spark inflammation into action.

New AI diagnostic can predict COVID-19 without testing

A new artificial intelligence algorithm can accurately predict whether a person is infected with coronavirus based on a range of symptoms a person experiences. Researchers say the technology will help identify those with COVID-19 in populations that are experiencing limited clinical testing.

Lifestyle changes could delay memory problems in old age, depending on our genes

The genes GRB10 and ABTB1 are influential in nutrient-sensing pathways and memory. Researchers say these genes may be the molecular links between diet, neural stem cell aging, and cognitive ability.

Loss of smell and taste is strongest predictor of early COVID-19 infection

User data from a new COVID-19 symptom tracking app reveals a loss of taste and smell are the strongest predictors of a positive coronavirus diagnosis. Using the data, researchers have developed a model to identify which combination of symptoms together could best predict COVID-19 infection in individuals.

Study identifies which medications are safe to use in COVID-19 treatment

Researchers found no evidence NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen, may result in worse outcomes for some COVID-19 patients or help control the virus. TNF blockers and JAK inhibitors, used to treat inflammation and arthritis, were also found to be safe to use. However, low amounts of prednisolone or tacrolimus therapy may be useful in treating coronavirus infection.

Quarantine can have long-lasting psychological impacts

Quarantine as a means to protect the public from health threats, such as the current Coronavirus outbreak, may have a lasting psychological impact on people. Being quarantined raises the risk for PTSD and other mental health disorders. However, it remains the safest option for those exposed to infection to prevent disease spread.

How CBD takes effect in the brains of people with psychosis

During memory tasks, people with psychosis have different patterns of activity in the prefrontal and mediotemporal brain areas compared to those without the disorder. When exposed to cannabidiol (CBD), the activity of the brain areas became more like those seen in the controls for people with psychosis. Patients reported a decrease in symptoms of psychosis following one dose of CBD. Researchers stress that no definitive conclusions could be made about the effectiveness of CBD use over a sustained period.

Severe childhood deprivation has longstanding impacts on brain size in adulthood

Young adults who faced extreme deprivation as children had, on average, an 8.6% smaller brain size than their peers who did not suffer from deprivation. The deprivation related changes in brain volume were associated with lower IQ and increased ADHD symptoms.
