High Prevalence of Evidence of CTE in Brains of Deceased Football Players

A new JAMA study reveals chronic traumatic encephalopathy was present in a high number of brains of former football players. Researchers looked at the brains of former high school, college and NFL football players. Of the 202 brains analyzed, 177 showed signs of CTE. 110 of the 111 former NFL players' brains were diagnosed with CTE. Researchers say that, while the findings are significant, the findings could have limitations due to the players' families being motivated to donate the brains as a result of public awareness of the lasting effects of head injuries in football players.

Risk for Bipolar Disorder Associated with Faster Aging

A new study in Neuropsychopharmacology reveals an association between faster aging and bipolar depression. Researchers discovered those with bipolar disorder who did not take lithum had shorter telomere length than those with the disorder who took the medication. The study suggests reduced telomere length could reduce hippocampal neurogenesis, increasing the risk for mood disorders.

Autism Severity Detected With Brain Activity Test

EEG tests reveal children on the autism spectrum have lower peak alpha frequency than their peers not on the spectrum. Additionally, the lower the peak alpha frequency, the lower a child's non-verbal IQ was, the researchers discovered. Researchers believe the peak alpha frequency may not only be a useful biomarker for autism diagnosis, but also a marker to test the severity of the disorder.
