Prenatal parental stress linked to behavior problems in toddlers

The prenatal wellbeing of first-time mothers has a direct effect on the behavior of children at 24 months. Mothers who experienced stress and anxiety while pregnant were more likely to have children who displayed behavioral problems, such as temper tantrums, spitefulness and restlessness. The children also exhibited emotional problems, including being clingy, tearfulness and unhappiness. Emotional problems were exacerbated if their parents experienced relationship problems during early pregnancy.

Why babies born during winter are at higher risk of developing mental health disorders

Cortisol levels are higher in women who give birth during winter months. The findings shed light on why mental health disorders are more common in those born during colder seasons.

Autonomic nervous system appears to function well regardless of mode of childbirth

The autonomic nervous system and cortical systems function similarly in low-risk newborns whether they experienced labor and natural birth or were born via elective cesarean section. However, those who were delivered via C-Section following long periods of labor had increased accelerations in heart rate and lower gamma frequency EEG a day after birth than the other two groups.

Expectant mothers can mitigate the impact of marijuana on baby’s brain development

Maternal cannabis negatively impacts fetal brain development at an early stage of pregnancy than was previously believed. However, increasing choline consumption, either through diet or supplementation, could help protect the developing brain from potential harm.

High levels of estrogen in the womb linked to autism

Estrogens were significantly elevated in fetuses that later went on to develop autism. Higher levels of prenatal estrogens were more predictive of ASD than higher levels of prenatal androgens. The study supports a twenty-year-old theory that increased prenatal sex steroid hormones are a potential cause of autism spectrum disorder.

Offspring of pregnant women exposed to high level of pollutants may have lower IQs

Maternal exposure to higher levels of air pollution is associated with lower IQ scores in their children. For those whose mothers were in the highest 10% of exposure had IQ score that were, on average, 2.5 points lower than those whose mothers were in the lowest 10%. However, higher maternal folate levels appear to neurtralize the effect of high pollution exposure on offspring.

The delivery method of twins may play a role in their neuropsychological development. A correlation has been discovered between twins born by cesarean section and poor cognitive development compared to twins born via virginal delivery.
