Changes in brain attention may underlie autism

Those on the autism spectrum had atypically smaller pupil dilation compared to the control group during distracting conditions while taking a push-button test. The findings suggest those with ASD may have dysregulation in locus coeruleus activity. The dysregulation of the LC may explain the exaggerated responses to environmental stimuli and fixated behaviors many with ASD experience.

Brain tumors impact normally helpful cells

Glioma brain tumors alter the function of astrocytes, possibly contributing to seizures many brain cancer patients experience. Astrocytes encasing gliomas exhibit different molecular signatures based on their proximity to the cancer cells. Those directly touching the cancer cells become elongated and swollen, mimicking the astrocyte's response to other epilepsy-related brain injuries.

COVID-19 linked to rare form of encephalitis

A patient who tested positive for COVID-19 developed acute necrotizing encephalitis (ANE) as a result of the coronavirus infection. An MRI scan revealed the patient had lesions in the thalamus and temporal lobes, areas of the brain implicated in consciousness, sensation, and memory function. Researchers advise doctors to look out for COVID-19 patients who present with altered levels of consciousness, as this may be symptomatic of ANE.

Clues to COVID-19 coronavirus’s vulnerability emerge from an antibody against SARS

Structural mapping of both SARS and SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, reveals an almost identical site on both coronaviruses to which the CR3022 antibody binds. This suggests a functionally important and vulnerable site for this family of coronaviruses.

          Lucy had an ape-like brain

Endocranial imprints of Australopithecus afarensis revealed they had an ape-like brain organization. Evidence was also found of protracted brain growth, which suggests infants may have had a longer dependence on caregivers, just like humans.
