Trick the Brain, Taste the Reward: How Expectations Rewrite Sweetness

Expectation is the secret ingredient. New neuroimaging research reveals that believing a drink contains sugar can "supercharge" the brain's reward response to artificial sweeteners.

Artificial Sweeteners Tied to Faster Cognitive Decline

A large study of nearly 13,000 adults found that consuming high levels of certain artificial sweeteners is linked to faster declines in memory and thinking over eight years. The effect was particularly strong in people with diabetes and those under 60. Some sweeteners, like aspartame and saccharin, were strongly associated with decline, while tagatose was not.

Artificial sweeteners combined with carbs may be more harmful than sweeteners alone

Consumed alone, artificial sweeteners do not appear to have a negative impact. However, when consumed with carbohydrates, insulin sensitivity changes and the brain has a decreased response to sweet tastes.

Artificial Sweeteners Have Toxic Effects on Gut Bacteria

A new study reports FDA approved artificial sweeteners and some sports supplements are toxic to digestive gut bacteria. Researchers say the consumption of artificial sweeteners can adversely affect gut microbial activity, causing a wide range of health issues from cancers to type-2 diabetes.
