Even the Best Models for Reading Facial Expressions May Be Partly Subjective

Even the best models for recognizing facial emotions fall short of real human judgment. Additionally, individual differences mean different people read different emotions from the same face, making it harder to ascertain exactly which facial movements are systematically linked to different emotional states.

Stranded Dolphins’ Brains Show Common Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease

Researchers found the brains of three species of stranded dolphins had classic biomarkers associated with human Alzheimer's disease. The findings add weight to the "sick leader" theory, where a group of healthy dolphins finds themselves in dangerously shallow waters after following a group leader showing signs of confusion.

Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease May Be Detectable Before Significant Symptoms Are Obvious

People with genetic risks for Alzheimer's disease may exhibit changes in brain structure and reduced performance in cognitive tests long before symptoms of the neurodegenerative disease become obvious.

Brain activity may help predict success of CBT in depression

Only 45% of patients with major depressive disorder find benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). A neuroimaging study reveals those who respond to CBT have greater neural activity in the right striatum and right amygdala pretreatment than those who find little benefit from the treatment. The findings could serve as a biomarker to discover who will respond to CBT.

Dietary fats entering the brain may explain link between obesity and depression: Mouse study

A mechanism that links exposure to high-fat diets in mice to changes in hypothalamic function which leads to depression has been identified. Saturated fatty acids enter the brain via the bloodstream, where they accumulate and affect key signaling pathways associated with the development of depression.
