A New Treatment Reduces Inflammation in Multiple Sclerosis Mice Models

Administering a lipid that mediates inflammation reduced chronic inflammation associated with multiple sclerosis in mouse models. Researchers found these mediator lipids are reduced in humans with multiple sclerosis.

An Ion Channel Differentiates Newborn and Mature Neurons in the Adult Brain

Researchers report newborn granule cells in the dentate gyrus become less excitable after three weeks. The loss of excitability is crucial for the functioning of mature neurons.

Boosting Klotho Protein Slows Aging and Enhances Health

Increasing levels of the Klotho protein can slow aging and improve health across multiple systems. Scientists showed that mice treated to produce more secreted Klotho (s-KL) had better muscle strength, bone density, cognitive function, and even lived 15–20% longer.

Brain protein mutation from child with autism causes autism-like behavioral change in mice

Researchers implanted a genetic mutation that encodes the DAT protein from a child with ASD into mice. The mice began to exhibit autism-like behavioral deficits. Mice with the DAT T356M mutation had reduced social interaction and a loss in social dominance. The mice also demonstrated an increase in hyperactivity. At the physiological level, the researchers found impaired striatal dopamine transmission and clearance.

Brain’s Unique Wiring Determines How Alzheimer’s Spreads

A 10-year study proves that Alzheimer’s tau tangles spread via an individual's unique neural connections. The findings confirm that targeting tau as it travels between synapses could halt the disease's progression.

Can’t Buy Me Happiness: Joy Beyond Wealth

Many Indigenous and local communities report high levels of life satisfaction despite low monetary incomes, challenging the widely held belief that economic growth is essential for happiness. Surveying 2,966 individuals across 19 globally diverse sites, researchers found life satisfaction scores in these communities comparable to those in affluent countries, with some even surpassing the happiness indices of wealthy Scandinavian nations.

Drug-Coated Neural Implants Reduce Immune Rejection

A new study shows that coating neural prosthetic implants with the anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone helps reduce the body’s immune response and scar tissue formation. This strategy enhances the long-term performance and stability of electrodes used to connect prosthetic limbs to the nervous system.

How the Brain Extinguishes Fear Memories

Scientists have, for the first time, identified the brain signals linked to extinguishing fear memories in humans. Using implanted electrodes and advanced Representational Similarity Analysis, they showed that theta activity in the amygdala increases when previously unpleasant cues are re-learned as safe.
