Cannabinoid Medications Make Pain Feel Less Unpleasant and More Tolerable

A new study reveals cannabinoid medications may not reduce pain itself, but instead make pain feel less unpleasant and more tolerable.

Cannabis Causes Birth Defects in Susceptible Mice

In-vitro exposure to THC can cause birth defects in genetically predisposed mice. THC interferes with Hedgehog signaling in the developing mice, leading to an increased risk of birth defects.

          Cannabis Compound Curbs Anxiety

A new study illuminated the anxiety-reducing potential of d-limonene, a natural component of cannabis, when combined with THC. The research showcases how vaporized d-limonene can mitigate the anxiety and paranoia often induced by THC, opening avenues for safer medicinal and recreational cannabis use.

High-Potency Cannabis Linked to Youth Psychosis

Young individuals who use high-potency cannabis between ages 16 and 18 are twice as likely to experience psychosis by their mid-twenties compared to those who use lower-potency strains. This research utilized data from the Children of the 90s study, tracking thousands of participants from Bristol.

High-THC Cannabis Linked to Psychosis and Addiction

A systematic review of nearly 100 studies found that high-THC cannabis products are linked to negative mental health outcomes, particularly psychosis, schizophrenia, and cannabis use disorder. While some therapeutic research hinted at benefits for anxiety and depression, results were inconsistent and often showed potential harm.

Astrocytes Shed Light on the Link Between Cannabis Use and Sociability

Exposing mice to THC, researchers noted persistent activation of mitochondrial cannabinoid receptors located within astrocytes resulted in a cascade of molecular processing that led to dysfunctional glucose metabolism. The ability of astrocytes to transform glucose into "food" for neurons was reduced. The reduction resulted in a compromise in neural function, with a harmful impact on behavior. Specifically, social interactions were reduced for 24 hours post cannabis exposure.
