A Fading Sense of Smell: New Predictor of Late-Life Depression?

Researchers identified a correlation between loss of smell and an increased risk of developing late-life depression. The study, spanning eight years and involving more than 2,000 older adults, doesn't establish causality but suggests that an impaired sense of smell might indicate overall health and well-being.

A First Look at How the Psychedelic Salvinorin A Works in the Brain

As with other psychedelics, salvinorin A increased activity across the brain. However, salvinorin A use resulted in more random and disconnected signaling in the default mode network, a brain network associated with relaxing and daydreaming.

Altered Fat Metabolism Plays Key Role in ALS

People with ALS have 2.5-fold higher levels of arachidonic acid, a lipid commonly found in fatty parts of meat and fish that spurs on inflammatory process, in their spinal motor cells than people without the disease. Treatment with caffeic acid, an anti-inflammatory compound naturally found in coffee, tea, and tomatoes, reduced some of the symptoms associated with ALS, and extended lifespan in animal models.

Brain changes linked with Alzheimer’s up to 30 years before symptoms appear

Researchers have identified average levels of biological and anatomical brain changes associated with Alzheimer's disease over thirty years before symptoms appear. In those with genetic risk factors for Alzheimer's, researchers found changes in cognitive performance up to 15 years before becoming symptomatic. Changes in Tau levels in the cerebral spinal fluid appeared up to 34 years before dementia symptoms occurred, and physical changes to the medial temporal lobe were apparent up to 9 years before cognitive impairment was apparent.
