A family member of mine has recently been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s) (Motor Neurone Disease). The initial diagnosis has been confirmed by two other specialists and two sets of electrical tests have been done (electromyography and nerve conduction). A mimic, multifocal motor neuropathy, seems to be excluded as no conduction blockage has been found. The family now accepts the diagnosis but we are very curious about the latest research, especially stem cell work. I have done a sigificant amount of exploration of the literature, my own scientific background helping enormously, but I would appreciate discussion on recent research results and more information on where stem cell work is up to.
